ASE G1: maintenance and light repair

G1 is the ASE certification for service work on cars and light trucks: oil and cooling service, belts, brakes, tires and alignment, batteries, lamps and A/C recharge. The test is 65 questions in all, of which 55 count, in 90 minutes. It asks for 1 year of work experience, and it's the only ASE test you can take from home on the first attempt. Below: the seven content areas, the facts with sources, and 4 questions to try.

4 sample questions from five areas

0 of 4 answered · 0 correct
Question 1 of 4 · Electrical · 15%Not answered

The fuse for a vehicle accessory circuit blows immediately upon installation. A technician wants to isolate the exact location of the short circuit safely. What is the correct first step?

Explanation

Correct: Disconnecting the load component, then sections of harness, while watching for the fault narrows the short to one part of the circuit safely.

Incorrect: Bypassing the fuse with a wire removes all protection and can melt the harness.

Incorrect: A higher amperage fuse lets the short overheat the wiring and can start a fire.

Incorrect: A short to ground is found by checking resistance to ground with the fuse out; resistance to power does not locate it.

Incorrect: Replacing the entire harness before locating the short is expensive guessing, and the fault could be in a component.

Question 2 of 4 · Engine Systems · 16%Not answered

A metallic rattling noise is heard from under the vehicle at idle. A visual inspection reveals a bent heat shield touching the exhaust pipe. The exhaust hangers and clamps are secure. What is the proper repair?

Explanation

Incorrect: Acoustic dampening material does not survive exhaust heat and leaves the shield touching the pipe.

Incorrect: The catalytic converter is not making the noise; the bent heat shield is.

Incorrect: Welding the shield to the pipe removes the air gap the shield needs to block heat.

Incorrect: The hangers are already secure; more rubber hangers do not stop a shield from touching the pipe.

Correct: The hangers and clamps are secure and the noise comes from the bent shield touching the pipe, so restoring the heat shield clearance (and securing it) cures the rattle.

Question 3 of 4 · Manual Drive Train and Axles · 11%Not answered

During an inspection, gear oil is found seeping from the seam between the differential housing and the rear cover plate. The pinion seal and axle seals are dry. What is the correct repair?

Explanation

Incorrect: The pinion seal is dry, so replacing it does not address the leak.

Incorrect: The carrier housing is not damaged; only its seal to the cover is leaking.

Incorrect: Sealing the vent tube traps pressure and pushes oil out past the seals; the vent must stay open.

Correct: Oil seeping from the seam between housing and cover is a failed cover gasket or sealant, fixed by resealing the cover plate.

Incorrect: The axle shaft seals are dry; the leak is at the cover seam.

Question 4 of 4 · Suspension and Steering · 24%Not answered

A technician is inspecting the lower control arm bushings on a vehicle's suspension system for excessive wear or damage. Which of the following inspection methods provides the most accurate assessment of the condition of the bushings?

Explanation

Incorrect: A visual check only finds surface cracks and misses play and internal separation.

Incorrect: Spinning the tire by hand checks bearings and drag, not control arm bushings.

Incorrect: Shaking the tire loads the bearing and ball joints more than the arm bushings, so it is not the accurate method here.

Incorrect: Ride height reflects the springs, not bushing condition.

Correct: Pry bar leverage between the arm and its mount moves the bushing and shows play, separation or tearing that a look alone misses.

Answer every question to see your score

Pick an answer and every option's explanation opens. The practice test has a longer set in roughly the proportion of the scored areas, with a filter for each one.

Seven content areas

Every question on the test ties to a task in the guide's task list: 173 tasks across the seven areas (G1 study guide, pp. 4–8). Suspension and steering alone holds 59 of them.

What "light repair" means here

The task list is written in service verbs: inspect, measure, replace, adjust, refill, bleed, relearn. You check a cooling system with pressure and dye, but you don't overhaul an engine; you machine rotors and bleed brakes, but anti-lock diagnosis is left to A5; you measure voltage drop and starter draw, but network and module faults belong to A6.

A few tasks that show how current the list is:

  • check and refill diesel exhaust fluid (DEF);
  • disarm the airbag system before steering work;
  • calibrate the steering angle sensor after an alignment;
  • run a TPMS relearn and repair a tire to the tire maker's standard;
  • test a battery by capacitance as well as by load.

45 scored? Not on G1

You'll see "55 questions, 45 scored" on prep sites. It comes from a line in the 2026 study guide itself, and it's a copy error: the G1 guide prints "45 scored" on p.3 and a total of 50 on p.4, but its own area counts add up to 55. The test page on ase.com says 55 scored plus 10 unscored research questions, not marked, so the test is 65 questions long.

Who takes G1

It fits technicians whose day is maintenance: quick-service and tire shops, dealership express lanes, fleet garages, general repair shops. Three rules set it apart from the A-series:

  1. Experience: 1 year, where the A-series asks for 2 years, and you can test first; the certificate waits until the experience is approved.
  2. Where you test: test center or remote proctoring at home or work (Prometric ProProctor), first attempt included. A first A-series attempt is test center only.
  3. Master status: not part of Master. G1 stands on its own; it doesn't stack toward Master Automobile Technician.

There is also a route for students: students in ASE-accredited programs who pass a set list of 8 ASE entry-level tests can earn G1 without taking it. Whether G1 or an A-test should come first is on G1 as a first test.

Spanish on screen

G1 comes in two languages: English with a side-by-side Spanish version and a pop-up glossary. The side-by-side version needs no separate registration: a "Leer en español" button on each question shows the Spanish text next to the English (guide, p. 3).

G1, quick answers

Is the ASE G1 hard?

ASE publishes no passing score, and its guides and FAQ give no pass rates, so there is no number to compare. What makes G1 demanding is breadth: 55 scored questions over seven systems, from engine service to A/C. What makes it approachable is that the tasks stop at service level.

How many questions are on the ASE G1?

65 in 90 min: 55 scored and 10 unscored research questions that aren't marked, so answer every one. Format details.

Can I take the ASE G1 online?

Yes: G1 is the only ASE test you can take remotely the first time; register at least 4 days ahead.

Does G1 count toward ASE Master certification?

No. Not part of Master Automobile Technician (that takes A1–A8). It's a separate credential with its own recertification test.
