ASE certifications list, series by series

ASE certification is earned one test at a time: each test you pass, backed by documented work experience, is its own certification for 5 years. The official FAQ counts over 50 tests, grouped into series by vehicle and job. Below is every series, the tests this site has practice questions for, and the steps from buying a test to holding the certificate.

The ASE test series

The series as listed in the Certification: Need to Know guide (revised January 2026):

Entry-level (student) certification is a separate program for students, with its own tests and score rules.

ASE certification requirements

Two things make a certification: a passed test and approved work experience.

  • Work experience: 2 years of full-time hands-on work (or the part-time equivalent) for A and T tests, 1 year for G1, 3 years for Advanced Level tests.
  • Training credit, A and T tests: An ASE-accredited program counts as 1 year, an OEM co-op program up to 2 years, 3+ ASE entry-level tests as 1 year, other training up to 1 year; substitutes cannot be combined.
  • Training credit, G1: An ASE-accredited program counts as 6 months, an OEM co-op program as 1 year, 3+ ASE entry-level tests as 6 months; substitutes cannot be combined.
  • Order doesn't matter: you can test first; the certificate waits until the experience is approved. You can pass a test as a student or a new hire and collect the certificate later.
  • Prerequisites apply only to the Advanced Level. L1: you must have passed A8 Engine Performance first. L2: you must have passed one diesel engine test (A9, H2, S2 or T2) and one electrical test (A6, H6, S6 or T6) first.

There is no school or degree requirement. ASE's Need to Know guide calls the certification voluntary.

How to get ASE certified

  1. Open a myASE account

Tests are bought and scheduled at my.ase.com. Pick the test where your work is strongest: G1, the broadest one, or the A test closest to your daily jobs.

  2. Buy the test in a registration window

Tests are sold in quarterly registration windows. Current window: Oct 10–Dec 31 (fall 2026). From purchase you have 90 days to sit the test.

  3. Book a Prometric appointment

First attempts are at a Prometric test center, with one exception: G1 is the only ASE test you can take remotely the first time; register at least 4 days ahead.

  4. Take the test

    Computer-based multiple choice with a pop-up English–Spanish glossary; the A tests and G1 also have a side-by-side Spanish version.

  5. Get results, then the certificate

Score report emailed when you finish the test. The certificate follows once your work experience is approved, about three weeks after the test per the FAQ on ase.com.

How long it takes

The test itself is one sitting: 90 min for G1, 75 min for A1, 90 min for A6. The calendar is set by the work experience: 1 year for G1, 2 years for an A or T test, less with approved training. Someone who already has the experience can buy, sit and pass a test within the 90 days that a purchase allows.

Test centers and remote testing

The tests run on Prometric's network. Testing is offered in the United States, U.S. territories and Canada, and on some overseas military bases. A first attempt is test center only for every test except G1, which you can take with live remote proctoring at home or work. Recertification tests can be taken remotely for every series. You choose the center when you book the appointment in myASE.

Passing score

Not published by ASE. ASE releases neither a cut score nor the questions you missed. You get pass or fail and a detailed score report. The “70%” or “50–60%” figures that circulate online come from the entry-level student tests, a different program.

Recertification

Every certification lasts 5 years, then a recertification test; a recertification resets the expiry to five years from the recert date. Recertification tests for the A, G1 and T tests are about half the length of the original (A1's is 23 questions, 30 minutes); Advanced Level recertification tests are full length (L1's is 50 questions, 2¼ hours). A-series holders can extend through the Renewal App instead. Details and costs: recertification and test cost.

What ASE certifications are there?

Series A (A1–A9), G1, T (T1–T8), L (L1–L4), B (B2–B6), C1, F1, H (H1–H8), P (P1–P2), S (S1–S7) and the military MIL series, each test a certification of its own. The list above links the ones this site covers.

What is an ASE entry-level certification?

A student program run through ASE's education foundation, with its own tests. It is not one of the professional certifications above, although passing three or more entry-level tests can count toward the work experience a professional certification needs (see the requirements above).

How do I become ASE certified?

Pass a test and document the work experience it requires: 2 years for most tests, 1 year for G1. You can test before the experience is complete.

Can you look up someone's ASE certification?

Only through a certification status request form on ase.com, which needs the technician's ASE ID number, per the FAQ on ase.com. The FAQ names no other way.

How much does ASE certification cost?

In 2026 one test bought on its own costs $96, registration included, and every extra test in the same order adds $62. The full grid is on test cost.
