What ASE A5 costs, order by order
As of Oct 2026, A5 on its own costs $96: the $62 test fee plus a $34 registration fee, which is charged once per order rather than once per test. The cheapest way to take A5 is in the same order as another test. Below: the pairing, the retake bill, and what keeping A5 current costs.

A5 with a second test in one order
Because the registration fee is per order, the second test in an order costs only its $62 test fee. A5 with ASE A4 Suspension and Steering, or with any other test, comes to $158 for two tests in one order ($62 × 2 + $34); $192 if bought as two separate orders.
The catch is time: 90 days from purchase to schedule and take the test; no changes within 3 days of the appointment. Order two tests only if you can sit both within that window.
What a retake costs
A retake is a new purchase: the $62 test fee, plus the $34 registration fee unless the order holds other tests, so a retake bought on its own costs $96 again. You can buy it once 30 days have passed since the attempt.
Two cheaper habits: put the retake in the same order as another test you were going to take, and arrive early, because latecomers may be turned away and forfeit their test fees.
Keeping A5 current: A5R or the Renewal App
Certification lasts 5 years, and two routes keep it current:
- The A5 recertification test: 23 questions in 30 min, $96 when it is the only test in the order ($62 + $34). Several recertification tests in one order are capped at $220 in total, registration included.
- The Renewal App costs $52/yr and covers every A1–A9 certificate you hold, so five years of it come to $260 however many you keep current.
On list fees alone, one recertification order every five years costs less than the app, even a capped order for a full set of tests. What the app buys is no appointment and no all-or-nothing test day; it can also reactivate an expired credential (see the table above). Every route side by side: ASE recertification.
