ASE A6 study guide, by weight and by meter
Study A6 in order of weight and practice the meter work as you go. Body electrical and general diagnosis are 17 and 13 of the 50 scored questions, more than half the test, and every area leans on the same few readings: voltage, voltage drop, current and resistance. The source is the 2026 study guide from ASE, a PDF with the task list and sample questions; this page turns it into an order of work.
- 34%body electrical
- 26%general diagnosis
- 90 minon test day
- Unchangedvs the 2025 guide
The order: largest areas first
- Body electrical, 17 questions. Clusters and infotainment, power windows, seats and locks, keyless entry, the immobilizer, airbags, cameras and park assist. Learn to split a module-controlled circuit into input, command and output. Body electrical
- General diagnosis, 13. The meter skills, parasitic draw, fuses and diodes, schematics, network faults and module programming. Work it alongside body electrical: body questions are diagnosis questions on body circuits. General diagnosis
- Battery and starting, 9. Battery tests, starter draw, cable voltage drop, and electrical versus mechanical slow crank. Battery and starting
- Lighting, 6. HID, LED and adaptive headlamps, aiming, turn signals and trailer wiring. Lighting
- Charging, 5. Output tests, ripple and module-controlled generators. Small, but it reuses the voltage-drop skill from general diagnosis and battery and starting. Charging
The meter toolkit
Know what each of these readings means and the diagnosis questions in every area get shorter:
- Available voltage vs. voltage drop. One lead to ground shows what reaches that point; both leads across a part show what it uses. Across a closed switch or a good connection the reading should be close to 0 V; across an open in a powered series circuit it is close to source voltage.
- Voltage drop, not resistance, for high-resistance faults. Measure with current flowing. An ohmmeter on a dead circuit can show a good reading on a cable end that loses volts under load.
- Amps, milliamps, microamps. 1 A = 1,000 mA = 1,000,000 µA. The study guide includes a sample on this conversion.
- Current. An inductive clamp for starter and charging current; an ammeter in series for key-off drain.
- Ohm's law and watts. Amps = watts ÷ volts: a 55 W lamp on 12 V draws about 4.6 A. Loads added in parallel lower total resistance and raise current.
- Waveforms. A lab scope shows what a meter averages away: generator ripple, a network signal pulled low, a dropout.
- Scan tool and bidirectional control. Command a relay, motor or lamp to split a fault into the module side and the wiring-and-load side.
What older prep material misses
No change from the 2025 guide: same 50 scored questions, areas and task list, so the 2025 guide is still current. The gap is with older third-party material. The current task list includes:
- Data-bus networks: identify the network type and diagnose communication failures.
- Module work: swapping a control module, then programming, coding or initializing it.
- Low-voltage energy storage: non-traditional battery chemistry, multi-battery setups and boost capacitors, not just one lead-acid battery.
- Driver aids and telematics in body electrical: collision mitigation, park assist, cameras, head-up display.
Check a book or course against the five areas in the 2026 guide. A list with separate battery and starting areas, or a separate gauges area, does not match it.
What ASE gives you
- The 2026 study guide: test specifications, the full task list and sample questions; 3 of the 9 sample questions are built on a circuit diagram, two of them with a meter on it.
- A paid practice test: 25 questions, with 60 days to finish; the price is not shown on ASE's practice test page.
Using the practice questions
Take the practice test cold and count misses by area. Then work the areas in the order above, starting with the heaviest one you missed in. Read the note on every option, not just the right one: on a diagnosis question the wrong options are real faults too, and the note says which reading would have pointed to each. Before test day, time one full run at 90 min for 60 questions.
- ASE A6 Format, the five content areas and what makes the electrical test different
- ASE A6 practice test Questions from all five electrical areas, every option explained
- ASE A6 exam facts Format, passing score, results, retakes and recertification, sourced
- ASE A6 cost A6 alone, a retake, A6 with A8 in one order, and keeping A6 current
- ASE A6 wiring diagrams Symbols, and reading a schematic to find an open, a short or high resistance
A6 study guide, quick answers
Is there an ASE A6 study guide PDF?
Yes. ASE publishes one study guide PDF for the automobile series; its A6 section has the test specifications, the task list for each area and sample questions.
What should I study first for A6?
Body electrical (34%) and general diagnosis (26%). Together they are more than half the scored questions, and the voltage-drop and current skills from general diagnosis carry into every other area.
What do you need to pass A6?
There is no published target: ASE releases neither a cut score nor the questions you missed. Aim to be steady across all five areas, and read the notes on the options you got right as well as the ones you missed.
Has the A6 test changed for 2026?
No. The A6 section of the 2026 guide matches the 2025 edition. What older third-party material misses is listed above.
